How We Review & Recommend
How Traveleak reviews hotels, resorts, trains and cruises, how we research and select travel products, how we verify information, disclose commercial relationships and distinguish research from hands-on testing.
For the purposes of this page, Traveleak distinguishes between firsthand reviews and research-led travel product recommendations. A review is based on a real stay or journey and is written to help readers understand how an experience actually feels and functions beyond first impressions and marketing language. A travel product recommendation, such as a product guide, is built through research to help readers narrow a choice. We keep the two distinct and say which one you are reading.
The distinction between firsthand experience, observation and researched fact is central to our approach. When we did not stay in a room category, use a facility, dine in a restaurant, experience a particular part of a journey or use a product, we do not write as though we did.

Our Editorial Principles
Reviews are based on an actual stay or journey
Every Traveleak Hotel Review is based on a real stay at the property. Every Train Review or Cruise Review is based on a journey we actually took. The dates, accommodation or cabin class, route and other relevant details are stated so readers can understand the context of the review.
Travel product recommendations are research-led
Travel product recommendations are research-led, including those in product guides, packing lists and other editorial formats. Our research draws on manufacturer specifications, documented product features, warranty and support information, availability in the relevant market and other relevant official information. We assess this information against the travel needs described in the article and distinguish researched information from any firsthand product use.
Firsthand experience is kept distinct from researched fact
Our first-person observations describe what we personally experienced. Background, history, specifications, routes, schedules and other objective information may be researched separately. We make that distinction clear rather than presenting researched information as firsthand experience.
Nothing is scored or ranked
Traveleak does not use numerical scores, star ratings or pros-and-cons tables in individual reviews. Hotels, trains and cruises serve different travellers and purposes, so our reviews focus on character, execution, experience, practical context and suitability rather than reducing an experience to a single number. Travel product recommendations do not score products, award stars or name a single winner; product guides describe, for each product, why it stands out and what to consider. Any future awards, annual selections or ranked projects will use a separate published methodology.
Facts are checked in context
When preparing a review or a Travel Products article, we check practical information against appropriate primary or official sources where available. Details can change after publication, especially fares, schedules, inclusions, opening hours, availability and contact information, so readers should confirm time-sensitive information before booking or buying.
Hotels & Resorts
How we visit and review hotels and resorts.
Every Hotel Review begins with an actual stay
A Traveleak Hotel Review is based on time spent at the property as a guest. We consider the experience from arrival to departure, including the room, suite or villa we stayed in, public spaces, service, dining and wellness where experienced, and the overall rhythm of the stay. If we did not use a facility or experience a particular room category, we do not imply that we did.
Stay Details and Review Disclosure
Each review includes the date of stay, length of stay, the room, suite or villa reviewed and, where relevant, how we travelled. A Review Disclosure then states whether the stay was hosted by the property, partly hosted or independently paid for. The disclosure provides commercial context without changing the editorial standard applied to the review.
What we consider
Our hotel reviews look at the setting and location, architecture and design, the room, suite or villa actually experienced, service, dining where experienced, wellness and amenities where relevant, accessibility information where available, and the overall experience. We also consider how well the property fulfils its own promise and which travellers it is most likely to suit.
Rooms, suites and villas
The accommodation we actually stayed in is the starting point. Other categories may be described for context when useful, but they are clearly distinguished from the room, suite or villa we personally experienced. Comfort, privacy, lighting, bedding, storage, bathroom design, functionality, views, noise and other practical details may all form part of the review.
Service, dining and the wider experience
Service is considered for warmth, consistency, knowledge, discretion and the ability to solve problems naturally. Where we dine, we consider the quality of the food and service, atmosphere and how dining contributes to the property. Amenities are assessed in relation to the hotel itself, not simply by counting how many facilities exist. The complete experience, including pacing, privacy, atmosphere and sense of place, matters more than any single feature.
Signature selection and Hotel Review are different
A property may be featured editorially or included in a curated Traveleak collection without having been reviewed. A Hotel Review indicates that Traveleak has experienced the property directly and can speak to how it performs in practice. Editorial selection and firsthand review therefore complement each other, but they are not the same designation.
Essential Information and How to Book
Essential Information presents practical facts such as location, how to get there, the best time to visit, check-in and check-out times and accessibility information where available. How to Book is kept separate from the editorial assessment. It may include the hotel’s official contact details and, where available, links to check rates or availability with booking providers. The hotel’s official website is identified separately from affiliate booking links and is not treated as a commission link.
Journeys
How we experience, research and review trains and cruises.
Every Journey Review begins with an actual journey
A Train Review or Cruise Review is written after Traveleak has travelled the journey described. Our reviewers assess the passenger experience available to guests. Where special access materially affects the experience, we make that distinction clear. The review is grounded in the route, dates and cabin or class stated under Journey Details. A journey may include elements we did not personally use, and those are not presented as firsthand experience.
Journey Details and Review Disclosure
Each review states the travel date, the duration travelled, the cabin or class reviewed, the route travelled and, where relevant, how we travelled. A Review Disclosure then states whether the journey was hosted by the operator, partly hosted or independently paid for. The operator has no editorial control in any case.
Cabins and classes
The cabin or class named in Journey Details is the one we can review firsthand. Other cabins, suites or classes may be described when they provide useful context, but the review must distinguish clearly between what we personally experienced and what we observed or researched.
What we consider
Journey Reviews may cover boarding and first impressions, the route, onboard design, cabins and suites, dining, service, the journey itself, scenery and stops, ports and excursions where relevant, practical tips, who the experience is for and our overall take. The structure may vary when a particular journey calls for a different emphasis.
Essential Information
Essential Information brings together the practical details a reader may need before travelling, including the operator, boarding point or embarkation port, how to get there, the best time to go, what is included, accessibility and, where relevant, luggage and dress code.
Routes, fares and schedules
Routes, fares, schedules and inclusions can change. When preparing a review, we check practical information against the operator’s official information where available. Readers should confirm current details before booking. We may update published information when a material change is identified, but publication of a review is not a promise of continuous real-time monitoring.
How to Book
How to Book is kept separate from the editorial assessment. It may include the operator’s booking and contact details and, where available, a link to book. If a booking link is an affiliate link, the relationship is disclosed clearly. Commercial links do not change the editorial conclusions of the review.
Travel Products
Travel Products may include product guides, packing lists and other editorial formats with selected product recommendations. Where products are recommended, those recommendations are research-led and follow the same standards for sourcing, verification and disclosure. We only describe hands-on use when testing actually took place and is stated clearly on the page.
Packing lists and similar editorial formats may include selected products within the article, with concise context explaining why each recommendation is relevant.
What a product guide is
A Traveleak product guide groups products by the need they serve, for example luggage for long-haul travel, and explains for each product why it stands out and what to consider. Guides are written by named authors and show the date they were last checked.
How we choose products
We start with the needs of the traveller the article is written for. We then compare manufacturer specifications, documented product features, warranty and support information, availability in the relevant market and other relevant official information, and select products for how well they suit those needs. Affiliate commission rates do not influence which products we select or how we present them.
Labels describe use, not rank
Labels such as “For long-haul travel” or “For lighter packing” describe what a product is suited to. They are not rankings, and no product in a Travel Products article is presented as the best overall.
What each product entry shows
Each entry shows the specifications that matter for the decision, where they come from and when they were verified, followed by an analysis of what the product offers and where its trade-offs lie. We do not currently display prices, discounts or stock status, which can change frequently.
Images
Product images are our own or are used under appropriate permission or licence, including manufacturer-supplied imagery, and are credited. We do not copy images from retailer listings.
Editorial Independence
Hotels, operators, manufacturers, brands and commercial partners do not approve Traveleak reviews or recommendations before publication and do not control our observations, conclusions or editorial language. A property, operator or manufacturer may provide factual information or point out an objective factual error, but that does not give it editorial control.
Commercial Relationships
Some reviews and Travel Products articles contain links to booking platforms, retailers or travel partners. If a reader books or buys through an affiliate link, Traveleak may earn a commission at no additional cost to the reader. The existence or rate of an affiliate commission does not change the editorial criteria we apply, our conclusions or what we write. Where an affiliate relationship is present, it is disclosed clearly.
How links are marked
Links that can earn Traveleak a commission are marked as sponsored in the page code. In Travel Products content that contains affiliate links, a clear and conspicuous disclosure appears near the beginning of the page, before the first affiliate link. In hotel and journey reviews, the affiliate disclosure appears with the booking links. A button may name the merchant, but the merchant has no say over the content.
Hosted and gifted experiences
Every review states whether the stay or journey was hosted, partly hosted or independently paid for. A hosted stay or journey does not guarantee coverage and does not guarantee a positive review. If Traveleak receives a product from a manufacturer or retailer, we disclose that relationship in the relevant article or product entry. Receiving a product does not guarantee inclusion in a Travel Products article and does not change what we write about it.
Product Research & Verification
How we check the information in Travel Products articles with product recommendations.
Specifications come from the maker
Dimensions, weight, capacity, materials and similar specifications are taken from the manufacturer’s own published information. Each product entry names the source and the date it was verified. Where a specification cannot be confirmed from a primary source, we leave it out rather than estimate it.
Warranty and support
Warranty length, what it covers and the support available are taken from the manufacturer’s warranty information for the market the page addresses, with their own source and verification date. Warranty terms can differ by country or market, so we verify them for the market relevant to the page.
Links and availability
Before a Travel Products article with product recommendations is published, we check that each product is listed for sale and that each link leads to the right product page. We do not monitor availability continuously, so a product may later be discontinued or become unavailable.
The date we last checked
Every Travel Products article with product recommendations shows the date it was last checked. That date changes only when the information and links have actually been rechecked, not when the page is edited for another reason.
Hands-on Testing
Traveleak distinguishes research-led recommendations from hands-on testing. Hotel and journey reviews are based on firsthand experience; a Travel Products article with product recommendations only describes hands-on product use when that testing actually occurred and is stated on the page.
Where things stand
At present, the product recommendations in Traveleak Travel Products articles are based on research. We have not conducted hands-on testing of the products in them, and each article says so in its section on how the products were selected.
When we use the word “tested”
We use “tested” only when Traveleak has used the product itself. When we describe a product as tested, we explain who tested it, the period or extent of use, and the conditions most relevant to the product. We do not use “tested”, “reviewed” or “hands-on” for products selected through research, and we do not describe an experience of a product we have not had.
If this changes
If Traveleak begins hands-on product testing, this page and the relevant Travel Products articles will be updated to explain what was tested and how.
Corrections & Updates
If you believe a Traveleak review or Travel Products article contains an objective factual error, or if material practical information has changed, please contact us. We welcome factual corrections. Corrections to objective information do not give a hotel, operator, manufacturer or commercial partner control over our editorial observations or conclusions.
